Reaching the antifascist geographical imagination

View through CrossRef
The broadest claims of the book are restated and the opening aphorism - ‘To think antifascistically is necessarily to think geographically; to think geographically ought to be to think antifascistically’ - is revisited to gauge the extent to which its principles have been secured through the book’s variegated engagements with Adorno. The book’s central claims are (cirumspectly) recast as a contrast between ‘negative spatialisation’ - an abstractive, totalising, geometricising approach to thought-and-practice, thoroughly saturated by fascistic (and capitalistic) demands - and ‘positive spatialisation’ - an openness to geographical promiscuity, multiplicity, fragmentariness and what may linger in the ‘nooks and crannies’. The former is prone to colonisation by the forces of coldness and hate, but, negative-dialectically, it can never extinguish the embers of warmth, love and all that remains in the latter. These embers are the Adornoian spur for a materialist-utopian imagining and acting differently in the here-and-now; and such is the promise of the antifascist geographical imagination.
