Die „Sammlung Metzler“ hat seit ihrer Gründung im Jahre 1961 mehrere Wandlungen erfahren. Anfangs hieß ihr Untertitel „Realienbücher für Germanisten“, woraus in den 70er Jahren „Realien zur Literatur“ wurde. In den 90er Jahren fiel auch dieser Zusatz – die Bände gehören nun einfach zur „Sammlung Metzler“. „Verzicht auf ausdrückliche Wertung und Deutung“ war programmatisch. Heute wird wohl jeder Band als anspruchsvolle Monographie konzipiert, in der mit aller Selbstverständlichkeit gewertet und gedeutet wird. Zu diesem neuen Typus gehört der Band von Katrin Kohl über Klopstock.
