Seit den 1980er Jahren hat die englische Germanistik einige bemerkenswerte Arbeiten zur Literaturgeschichte des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts hervorgebracht, die sich besonders durch ihre konsequente Bezugnahme auf die rhetorische Tradition auszeichnen. Zwei dieser Arbeiten sollen hier besprochen werden.
