View through CrossRef
The purpose of the article is to reveal the relationships between Dmytro Yavornytskyi and the intellectual community of Odesa in the late 19th and the first third of the 20th century. The source of the research was the epistolary letters of D. I. Yavornytskyi and his contemporaries. The theoretical and methodological basis of exploration is a combination of personalistic, interregional and source-based approaches, principles of scientificity, systematicity, as well as historical-genetic, historical-systematic, historical-typological methods and the method of sourcebased analysis. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the systematic understanding of D. I. Yavornytskyi’s epistolary contacts with figures of the intellectual community of Odesa, in determining their features and significance. Conclusions. The epistolary heritage of Academician D. I. Yavornytskyi contains diverse and representative material regarding the contacts of this Ukrainian scientist, teacher, and cultural figure with the intellectual community of Odesa. It is shown that D. I. Yavornytskyi’s intellectual contacts with a number of Ukrainian humanitarian figures, whose creative work is connected with Odesa, were productive. These include V. G. Borovyk, O. O. Brauner, M. F. Komarov, M. E. Slabchenko, V. I. Stromenko, and others, who successfully collaborated with D. I. Yavornytskyi in the fields of history, language, literature, art, museum and publishing. The scientist’s cooperation with Odesa figures was personal, corporate, and institutional in nature, and was not only private but also public. Thanks to his correspondents, D. I. Yavornytskyi learned about the events in the Ukrainian national and cultural life of Odesa. At the end of the 19th – early 20th century, he repeatedly considered Odesa as a possible place for his further professional growth, had intentions to get a chair at the university. During this period, the scientist's contacts with the intellectual community of Odesa were the most active. Later, especially during the establishment of Stalin’s totalitarian regime, these ties were significantly weakened and curtailed. The established cooperation of D. I. Yavornytskyi with his Odesa likeminded people had considerable continuity, led to the enrichment of Ukrainian intellectual heritage and the activation of national and cultural life.
