View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of George I Born as Duke Georg Ludwig of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, the monarch emerged from the dynasty of the Welfen. Due to the Act of Settlement, he became King of Great Britain as George I in 1714. Here you can see him in a juxtaposed chest pattern with a long wig, armor and Hermelin cube, the head slightly to the right, the eyes pointed head-on to the viewer. The effigy is surrounded by an oval frame with inscription. A light mirror in the lower area makes the frame metal appear. A cartouche with coat of arms is shown under the frame, along with all kinds of war tools: cannons with powder barrel and cannonballs, rifles, lances, armor and swords. The art collections of the Veste Coburg have an equal leaf of the king.
