Portrait George I, King of Great Britain (1660-1727)
View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of George I, King of Great Britain. In this depiction, the monarch is seen as a frontal chest with a slightly left-turned head, the eyes pointed towards the observer. He carries wig, Hermelinpelz, a jabot made of lace and a long chain around his shoulders. The effigy is embedded in an oval frame over which a curtain loops in some places. Under the effigy a cartouche with an allegorical scene is inserted. The cartouche is crowned.
Born as Duke Georg Ludwig of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, the monarch emerged from the dynasty of the Welfen. Due to the Act of Settlement, he became King of Great Britain as George I in 1714. In the summer of 1710, the Elector brought composer Georg Friedrich Händel to Hanover and appointed him as court band master.
This sheet does not seem to have been bought by the big museums. But in the British Museum in London there is a engraving by Müller of the poet John Milton, which is very similar to the style of the leaf here. Otherwise, the leaf has been severely trimmed, so it is hard to find without further inscription.
