The Hindman Feud
View through CrossRef
With a small but growing family, Falkner continued a law practice and other activities to support his wife and children. However, a conflict between the Hindman brothers and Falkner turned violent in an encounter that resulted in Falkner being tried for murder. Around this time, Falkner’s wife also died. When Falkner was released from jail, tensions with the Hindman family only escalated, and Falkner had to endure a second murder trial following another violent conflict with a friend of the Hindman’s. Falkner eventually headed north to Cincinnati, writing poems from his observations. He did return to Ripley, however, marrying once again and seeking to reestablish his life in Mississippi, including involvement in politics.
