Hindman offered Still a place to stay, food to eat, and work to do; plus he liked it more than any place he had ever lived. This chapter provides an overview of Hindman Settlement School in the 1930s and describes Still’s library work there as well as his summer 1935 work with the New Deal’s Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) program in Knott County. He established a friendship with Jethro Amburgey and began submitting poems for publication.
