Japanese Woman

View through Europeana Collections
Bertalan Székely was one of the supreme masters of nineteenth-century history painting in Hungary, as well as a reformer of Hungarian art schooling. His Japanese Woman is a landmark work, for it was the first painting in Hungarian art to show the influence of modern Japonism. Judging by her facial features, the model does not appear to be Japanese at all, although the objects featured in the picture point to an awareness of Japanese culture. Like most of the Hungarian general public, Székely probably made his first acquaintance with genuine Japanese articles at the East Asian exhibition held at the Hungarian National Museum in 1870. This exhibition almost certainly provided him with the inspiration to compose a Japanese theme in paint.
