Here is the 9th sheet of Kunisada’s series. It is dedicated to the 9th chapter (= Aoi Es) of the history of Genji (Genji monogatari Es Es 様), which deals with the death of Aoi, Genji’s wife. During her pregnancy she becomes ill and obsessed with a spirit. She gives birth to a healthy boy, but dies shortly afterwards. The picture shows Genji Das in deep mourning in front of his late wife’s chamberwomen.
