Mitsuuji from the chapter “The broom tree”

View through Europeana Collections
Kōchōrō Kunisadaga KKKKKKKSeries by Kunisada with pictures of Ryūtei Tanehikos K様 KGenji parody, “Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji K様 KKKKKKKK様 KKKKKK” with a woman in the foreground and a cartouche in the form of mussels and a fan blade with a genji chapter sign. Here’s the second way of presenting this series: Instead of a woman from history, Genji Hier/Mitsuuji Hier is seen himself in the picture. A cartouche in the shape of a fan blade with the head of a woman, her name and the corresponding chapter sign. Here Mitsuuji sits next to a blanket. Genji chapter sign on his kimono and belt. An almost identy pattern with a woman’s kimono from the AI 7719-1-30. In the fan blade cartouche, a woman who wraps herself firmly in a kimono. The name of the woman is Karaginu (?). Comparison of KI 7719-1-33 - Mitsuuji in the shell half the same robe as here and the woman in the fan cartouche has taken a similar attitude as in the large picture. The name Mitsuuji (hero of the Genji parody) is composed of the characters for “Hikaru (Gen) ji” (Luminator Genji), a name given to Genji due to its radiant grace in Murasaki’s novel.
