Jimmy, and Rosalynn, Won!
View through CrossRef
Abstract
This chapter considers how, running against an incumbent but unelected president, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter defeated President Gerald Ford by a very slim majority. It shows how Carter excelled against Ford in the presidential debates, but nearly lost the election with an ill-advised interview he gave to Playboy magazine. Confessing to having lusted in his heart, he attempted to explain his religion in human terms. His defense was weak, and he remained vague on the topic of abortion, but his promise never to tell a lie and to establish a government as good as the people won enough votes for him to become president.
