La Venezia seicentesca di Paolo Sarpi

View through CrossRef
Sarpi spent most of his life in Venice, where he was born. Passing the age of fifty, he took the opportunity of the Interdict dispute to step out of his conventual world and become the promoter of a struggle against the yoke that burdened Italy due to the Hispanic-Pontiff diarchy. From consultations to pamphlets to historiography, Sarpi committed himself to defending the sovereign prerogatives of the Republic against the undue interference of the Church of Rome. Having given up hope of religious reform, in his later years his texts circulated through intellectual circles in Europe.
