Letter to A.G.X. with three peasant women

The influences of different movements and artists are evident in the works created by Tsarouchis in the 1940s and early 1950s. He experiments with technique and colour, moving dialectically between past and present, myth, tradition and the contemporary world. In the portraits he creates he seeks to depict faces vividly and to convey their mystery to the viewer, as in the case of the portrait of Alexandros Xydis or the portrait of the peasant woman. He illustrates the letters he sends to Xydis by creating small drawings/ watercolours: peasant women, men in uniform and sailors are some of his favourite subjects of the period, which accompany his letters to the famous art critic. Beauty and idealization, allegory and drama, accentuated popular character, subtle ironic commentary as well as a romantic mood are elements that can be found in this period in his works.
