Orientalists, like Julius Wellhausen, have used this story to criticize Islam and the Prophet, portraying it as a political compromise with the polytheists of Makkah. However, scholars and hadith experts unanimously reject the narrations from Tarikh al-Tabari about this incident, citing their weakness, inconsistency, and unreliability. The story is considered fabricated (Mawdu') and baseless, with no credible foundation in Islamic tradition. Attempts to propagate it are rooted in falsehood and hold no significance, as the integrity of the Quran and the Prophet (peace be upon him) remains firmly established.
