MODERN JEWELLERY

View through Europeana Collections
A clasp from a bracelet or choker, of probable Victorian date. The clasp is made of two rectagular plates on top of each other. The upper plate is made of silver plated copper alloy or copper alloyed with silver. The bottom plate is made probably of debased gold. The clasp is slightly curved. The upper plate holds a rectangular domed piece of clear glass which is cracked. Around the glass setting the plate is recessed to hold a border of small white pearl beads. 8 out of 14 of these beads are missing. The lower plate is plain. One short edge of the clasp has a gap between the two plates where the other end of the bracelet / choker would have been inserted. The other short edge has a series of four holes within the lower plate to attach it it to the rest of choker/bracelet. The silver on the decorated face has discoloured to a dark greyish brown colour. The sides and the reverse of the clasp has been brushed and are therefore shiny. Weight 3.2g, length 17.19mm, width 13.47, thickness max 4.86mm.
