OLD GLOBES IN THE USSR

View through CrossRef
The author describes some of the more than sixty old terrestrial and celestial globes preserved in public institutions in the Soviet Union. Most are found in Leningrad, particularly in the Hermitage Museum. Dating mostly from the 17th and 18th centuries, the globes were largely made by foreign craftsmen and were usually sent to Russia as presents for the royal family. They vary considerably in age, size, material, and artistry.
