View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter describes and evaluates printing type fonts in Irish from the sixteenth century to the twentieth: that is, from the Queen Elizabeth I type to Colum Ó Lochlainn and Karl Uhlemann’s Colum Cille type of the 1930s. The author provides a detailed discussion of each type font and gives examples of texts that they were used on. The type fonts examined here include the Franciscans’ Louvain types A and B, the Rome type, the Moxon, the Paris, the Parker, the Barlow, the Christie, the early Figgins type, the Petrie, the Newman, the O’Rahilly, and Baoithín. The author contextualizes each type font and, using archival research, gives valuable insights into the motivations, aims, and aesthetics of the various type designers and advocates, taking into account related controversies and cultural debates.
