Runes in Saxo’s Gesta Danorum
View through CrossRef
Saxo Grammaticus’s Gesta Danorum includes a surprising amount of references to runic inscriptions, not only in the preface, but also in the many legends reported by the author. They refer to actual runic practices while recalling the descriptions made of them in old Norse literature. As well as having a narrative function, the references to runes are also intended to support Saxo’s claim to be drawing on ancient Danish sources, and therefore to demonstrate the veracity of his historical accounts.
