"The Battle of Ankara, which took place in 1402 between Amir Timur, the founder of the Timurids, and the Ottoman ruler Sultan Yıldırım Bayezid, was one of the turning points of Turkish history. Amir Timur, who achieved a great victory as a result of the war, captured the Ottoman ruler and gained great fame. The capture of Sultan Yıldırım Bayezid and his death shortly afterwards was one of the most tragic events in Ottoman history. Amir Timur stayed in Anatolia for a short time and took the lands belonging to the Anatolian beyliks from the Ottomans and returned them to their former owners. He divided the remaining lands among the sons of Yıldırım Bayezid. Thus, there was a lonğ struğğle for dominance between the Ottoman princes, called the Ottoman Interregnum, which brought the Ottomans to the brink of disintegration. Prior to the war, Mamluks, Ottomans, and the Golden Horde Khanate tried to form an alliance against Amir Timur, but without success. Amir Timur first marched against the ruler of the Golden Horde, Toktamysh Khan, and defeated him in the Battle of Terek in 1395. Then, in 1401, he captured Damascus and eliminated the Mamluks and later headed to Anatolia.
