„Uzor čovječje savršenosti“: Odjek smrti Ferenca Deáka u hrvatskoj javnosti
View through CrossRef
Along with Lajos Kossuth and István Széchenyi, Ferenc Deák forms the trope of the greatest figures in 19th-century Hungarian politics. The cult of this lawyer, politician and statesman was firmly established during his lifetime, although this does not mean that he was surrounded by the undivided respect of his nation. His death in 1876 enveloped Hungary in grief, but the news of the death of the creator of the Dual Monarchy echoed throughout Europe, naturally gaining significant space in the pages of the Croatian press. These texts are the subject of interest of this paper, and to a lesser extent the general attitude of the Croatian political public towards Deák is also considered. The press is a historical source of secondary importance, but it is undoubtedly important for gaining a more complete picture of individual processes and events. The corpus of obituary texts that accompanied the death of Ferenc Deák analyzed here allows us to better understand the views of the leading circles of Croatian politics at the time, especially when it comes to the past, current moment and future of Croatian-Hungarian relations.
