Conclusion

Abstract The Conclusion recaps the main arguments in The Radheshyam Ramayan in Text and Performance and reflects on Radheshyam Kathavachak’s legacy. It notes the collaborative, intergenerational creative process that goes into producing major works of literature like the Radheshyam Ramayan, and argues that it is an example of India’s “epic modernity.” Kathavachak was ever in dialogue with Tulsidas, but was a cosmopolitan figure and a product of his own modern age. Kathavachak and his press traded in a Hindu past devoid of Muslims and other religious minorities, and a society structured by brahminical patriarchy. Yet, his interventions in the fields of literature, performance, and publishing nonetheless challenged the moral authority and white supremacy of the British, and their cultural institutions of English language, literature, education, and Christianity.
