Sadullah Enverî Târîhi

"In this study, the transcription of the third volume of Enverî Târîhi, which is one of the fundamental sources of Ottoman Empire history, has been carried out, and the content of the work has been organized into different sections. The topics covering the years 1786/1787-1791/1792 (H. 1201-1206) in the book have been arranged through detailed and comprehensive research. As a result, we aimed to create a useful work that researchers can easily benefit from by blending the new information we obtained during our study with the existing knowledge. During the research process, the different copies of the third volume of Enverî Târîhi, found both domestically and internationally, were collected, and a transcription process was conducted. While comparing the available copies of this volume, the identified omissions and differences were indicated, and efforts were made to establish the text. As a result of the evaluation and transcription work, the text and analysis of Enverî Târîhi, which provides a detailed account of the 1787-1792 Ottoman-Russian-Austrian Wars, have been completed. The evaluation phase of the work has been completed including the topics such as Preparation Method, Chronicler Sadullah Enverî, Sadullah Enverî's Works, Using Enverî's History as a Source, Information About Enverî's History Book, Third Volume of Enverî's History, Contemporary Works of the Third Volume, Importance of Enverî's History and a Source for Today's Works. Following these sections, the text, including the original index of the work, was transcribed, and any issues encountered during the transcription process were explained through footnotes. In the section titled “Composition and Arrangement of the Text” in our study, we provide an explanation of the method we employed for the physical arrangement of the text. Under the relevant subject headings in this section, we also provide necessary explanations about the structure and organization of the book. The Chroniclers section in our book provides general information about the institution of chronicler. It gives an overview of their role and significance in historical documentation. Furthermore, in the section dedicated to the 1787-1792 Ottoman- Russian-Austrian Wars, which forms the main content of the book, relevant data pertaining to these wars is presented. This includes key events, significant developments, and relevant historical context related to the Ottoman-Russian-Austrian Wars during the specified time period. The first section consists of Sadullah Enverî's biographical information. In this section, the data obtained from archival documents related to Enverî's life is combined with the writings of other historians and researchers to strengthen the author's biography. As a result, new information has been added to our study, in addition to the previously written information about the author's life and accomplishments. The doctoral thesis of Saffet Çalışkan on the first volume of Enverî Târîhi and the doctoral thesis of Hikmet Çiçek on the second volume have been extensively utilized in this section. Both works are highly valuable and have contributed to our study in various aspects. Furthermore, significant information regarding the author's biography from Hüseyin Sarıkaya's book on Vâsıf Târîhi and Seydi Vakkas Toprak's book on Nurî Târîhi has been included in our study. In the Second Chapter of our book, we provide an introduction to Enverî's three-volume history book. We delve into the details of each volume, examining their content and structure. Additionally, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of the known copies of Enverî's work. Furthermore, we explore how other Ottoman historians have utilized Enverî's History in their own works. We highlight the works of these historians and compare them with Enverî's History, presenting both the similarities and differences in a clear and objective manner. By doing so, we aim to address any potential doubts or concerns that readers may have regarding the objectivity of the comparisons. Overall, this chapter aims to provide a thorough understanding of Enverî's history book, its volumes, and its relation to other works of Ottoman historians, ensuring a comprehensive and unbiased examination of the subject matter. The third chapter contains summary information about the contents of the events of the third volume of 1787-1792 (H. 1201-1206). Here, firstly, the fifth, sixth and seventh sections of the book were introduced, and then the subjects of the sections were summarized under separate headlines according to the year they were written. The explanations about the sources of the third volume are one of the leading subjects of our evaluation study and thus are important. This subject has been organized in the light of the information in the book. As a result of the research conducted here, it is observed that Enverî did not use any book in his work, but added the official archive documents of the court to his work when necessary. Since wars are closely related to individuals living in society, it is usual that there is more than one work on subjects such as the cause of the war, with whom it was fought, why it started, and how long it lasted. Various accounts written in this period about the 1787-1792 Ottoman-Russian and Austrian wars are mentioned in the third part of the book. In Enverî's book of history, besides the political and specific events of the period, there are also important and useful data applicable to today on many subjects. Based on this explanation, compilations that may attract the attention of researchers in different fields of social sciences have been made and added to the third section. Topics such as place names, gifts, bridge construction, grain transfer, riots and fires are a few of them. This field has been prepared in order to contribute to the interdisciplinary studies that are widely mentioned and given importance today. In the appendices section, sample copies of manuscripts related to the topic have been provided to give readers an idea of different versions. These samples have been included with the intention of providing insight into various editions for the readers. Additionally, a map illustrating the route of the Ottoman army during the 1787-1792 Ottoman-Russian-Austrian War, based on the points of the route, has been prepared and included in the work. Furthermore, a table presenting sample copies of manuscripts is also present in this section. Although we have prepared several tables on different topics during our thesis research, we have not included them in the study to avoid overwhelming the readers. Those interested in these tables can refer to our doctoral thesis to access this information."
