Marcellinus Comes: The Man and his Work
View through CrossRef
Abstract
Any historical work is inevitably permeated and shaped by the viewpoint and culture of its author. To understand the viewpoint and culture which permeated and shaped the chronicle of Marcellinus it is therefore necessary to begin with the chronicler himself. Yet, the search for the mind and milieu behind Marcellinus’ chronicle, his only extant work, is singularly difficult. One has to collate and analyse the chronicle’s entries in order to sketch in its background, as well as the author’s attitudes and pre occupations. Accordingly, it is the purpose of this initial chapter to lay the foundations for this whole study by presenting and interpreting the records which bear on the career and work of Marcellinus-who he was and what he did.
