Jiangnan Sizhu in the Greater Suzhou Area
View through CrossRef
Abstract
This essay looks at Jiangnan sizhu (江南絲竹) as it is performed in a village in the greater Suzhou area and in the county-level city of Taicang, both in Jiangsu province. In the process, it is shown how this regional sizhu tradition has a much broader repertoire than the badaqu (八大曲, “eight great pieces”) routinely performed in Jiangnan sizhu music clubs in Shanghai, some of which has been reintroduced as part of efforts at revitalization and sustainability. Furthermore, it discusses how annexing Jiangnan sizhu with two of its sibling genres—the music of regional operas such as kunqu (崑曲) and huju (滬劇) as well as shifan luogu (十番鑼鼓) music—has contributed to its flourishing and continued practice in these two places.
