Abstract This chapter examines the concept of “assemblage” and the central tenets of assemblage theory and assemblage thinking. Our contention is that assemblage theory and thinking provides valuable insights into understanding the dynamic and multifaceted social relations inherent in war. We first introduce the concept of assemblage as an analytical instrument to study ontologically diverse agents, artifacts, and narratives. Key tenets of assemblage thinking, across academic fields, are identified. Second, we discuss the under-theorization of war in International Relations, while advancing war as a social and relational practice. We then trace the assemblage lineage in war theorizing and consider the frustrations and shortcomings of war assemblage thinking. In the final part of the chapter, we take assemblage thinking forward, examining its political potential both as a means of critique and as a tool for progressive, decolonial, and future-oriented thinking.
