View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of John Sheffield. The British poet and statesman is presented here as a frontal chest. His head is slightly tilted, but he patterns the viewer from two differently designed eyes. He wears wig, jabot and loop on his shoulder. The portrait is oval. Below this is an English text, a biography of the depicted.
John Sheffield worked in the Navy and Army. He also worked as Lord Chamberlain Jakobs II (BS-III 723). By Wilhelm III he was elevated to the Marquess of Normanby in 1694, the Duke of Buckingham and Normanby by by Queen Anne in 1703. He got some political offices and was thus in opposition to Marlborough (BS-III 816). He was considered a patron of John Dryden (BS-III 91) and friend of Alexander Pope (BS-III 96). From 1703 he built his family seat in London, now Buckingham Palace.
The leaf was engraved as a copper engraving by stecher P. Rothwell. The template was written by the German painter and lute player Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723), who created a half-character portrait of the depicted in armor in about 1685. The paper was probably published in the “The Biographical Magazine” of 1796.
