Jerusalem: The Duke of Connaught on his way to the Holy Sepulchre.

View through Europeana Collections
A postcard with ballet prints from a photograph documenting the visit of Prince Arthur, son of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, to the Old City of Jerusalem, shortly after it was occupied by the British Army. The photograph, apparently taken at the end of April 1918, shows the Duke (walking first, left) alongside General Allenby, on the steps of the Christian Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem, on their way to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. This postcard was plasted on a New Year's greeting card (probably 1919) and incorporated a printed greeting as well as dried flowers. On the back of the card, a mesh print (apparently from a photograph) of bethlehem's houses was added, under which the headline was printed: "General view of Bethlehem". No details were printed on the card as to the time or location of its production, but it must be assumed that it was created in Eretz Israel at the end of 1918.
