SIR ROBERT PEEL (1788–1850) IN BRITISH HISTORIOGRAPHICAL RETROSPECT AND IN THE PERCEPTION OF CONTEMPORARIES

Статья посвящена политической биографии сэра Роберта Пиля (1788–1850) — выдающегося политического деятеля Великобритании первой половвины XIX в. При этом показывается, что с момента появления биографии Р. Пиля, созданной Н. Гэшем и считающейся сегодня классической (1972 г.), в британской историографии произошло серьезное переосмысление личности Р. Пиля, а его политические и интеллектуальные достижения оцениваются сегодня скромнее и с большей осторожностью. Также определенному пересмотру подверглись те аспекты биографии Р. Пиля, которые затрагивают его роль в основании современного консерватизма — в настоящее время его склонны оценивать скорее как протолиберала. Тем не менее, исследователи едины в том, что биографические подробности жизни Р. Пиля уже исзвестны достаточно детально, а накопленный за последние полвека материал позволяет выделить несколько новых проблем, вокруг которых могла бы быть построена его современная проблемная биография. Одна из таких проблем особо затрагивается в статье — речь идет о несоответствии оценок Р. Пиля современниками и историографами: первые сосредоточены на его недостатках, вторые — на достоинствах. Показывается, что причиной этого несоответствия является его происхождение из рядов среднего класса и последующее перемещение в ряды аристократии: политическая биография Р. Пиля часто давала основания полагать, что интересы одной социальной группы он предавал, а вторая так и не признала его своим. Итогом работы стал вывод о том, что сегодня пришло время для написания новой, проблемной по своему построению биографии Р. Пиля, учитывающей особенности его ego и способной преодолеть разрыв в оценках этого незаурядного политика, которые давались ему современниками и историками The article is devoted to the political biography of Sir Robert Peel (1788–1850), an outstanding British politician of the first half of the XIX century. At the same time, it is shown that since the appearance of the biography of R. Peel, created by N. Gash and considered classic today (1972), there has been a serious rethinking of R. Peel's personality in British historiography, and his political and intellectual achievements are evaluated today more modestly and with greater caution. Also, those aspects of R. Peel's biography that affect his role in the foundation of modern conservatism have undergone a certain revision — at present they tend to evaluate him more as a protoliberal. Nevertheless, researchers agree that the biographical details of R. Peel's life are already known in sufficient detail, and the material accumulated over the past half century allows us to identify several new problems around which his modern problematic biography could be built. One of these problems is particularly touched upon in the article — we are talking about the discrepancy between the estimates of R. Peel by contemporaries and historiographers: the former focus on his shortcomings, the latter on his merits. It is shown that the reason for this discrepancy is his origin from the ranks of the middle class and his subsequent transfer to the ranks of the aristocracy: R. Peel's political biography often gave reason to believe that he betrayed the interests of one social group, and the second did not recognize him as its own. The result of the work was the conclusion that today it is time to write a new, problematic biography of R. Peel, taking into account the peculiarities of his ego and able to bridge the gap in the assessments of this extraordinary politician, which were given to him by contemporaries and historians
