Abstract
Chausson began the Poeme in April 1896 and completed it on 29 June that year. In November, Eugene Ysaye, to whom the score is dedicated, sight-read it at an all-day-and-most-of-the-night musicale at the house of the Catalan painter Santiago Rusinal in Sitges, Spain. Ysaye gave the first public performance on 27 December 1896 at Nancy; the conductor was Guy Ropartz, who like Chausson, was a pupil of Cesar Franck.
