Porträt Marie Sallé (1707-1756)
View through Europeana Collections
Portrait Marie Sallé. The dancer is shown here as a whole figure. She stands in a dancer pose in front of a landscape in an exciting and heavily decorated dress. The etching was also colored.
Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759) wrote two operas with ballet numbers, “Alcina” and “Ariodante” at the Theatre Royal at Covent Garden in London, where he had the primaballerina Marie Sallé and her ballet ensemble.
The etching comes from the French stecher and lithograph Hippolyte Louis Émile Pauquet (1797-1871). As a template he chose a portrait of a fellow painter, Nicolas Lancret (1690-1743), which he created in 1730. The Austrian National Library in Vienna has a engraving that shows the full motif of Lancret.
