Impact of Flax Seed Oil on Caffeinated Energy Drink Induced Osteoporotic Changes in Thickness of Cortical Bone in Adult Male Albino Rats

Objective: To appraise defensive impact of flax seed oil on osteoporotic changes in thickness of cortical bonecaused by caffeinated energy drinks in adult male albino ratsMaterial &Methods: It was an experimental study accomplished at department of Anatomy, Shaikh ZayedPost graduate Medical Institute Lahore, for 8 weeks. 32 adult male albino rats (250-300gm) were equallydivided into four groups by randomization and acclimatized for 1week. Group A (Control) was given corn oil5ml per kg along with basal diet. Group B (Experimental) was given caffeinated energy drink (15ml per kg)along with corn oil. Group C (Experimental) was given caffeinated energy drink (15 ml per kg) and 40% flaxseed oil (5ml per kg), while group D (Experimental )was given caffeinated energy drink (15ml per kg) and60% flax seed oil (5ml per kg) once daily for 8 weeks. The femora were dissected out, observed for grossparameters and right femora were selected for histological examination.Results: Significant difference in mean thickness of cortical bone among experimental groups (p = 0.000)was observed.Conclusion: Flax seed oil helped in alleviating metamorphosis in thickness of cortical bone induced bycaffeinated energy drink.Keywords: Flax seed oil, caffeinated energy drink, thickness of cortical boneHow to cite: Waseem A, Zaheer A, Iqbal S.
