Surface pattern (waritsuke monyō 割付文様)/plant pattern (shokubutsu monyō 植物文様): rising steam (tatewaku 立涌) of pine needles, bamboo stalks and plum blossoms
View through Europeana Collections
Underground dyed A shōchikubai 様 (Pinie-Bambus-plum blossoms) motif. Passover marks (hoshi P). Dealer’s stamp (shōin Hän) on the lower stencil border. The depictions of these three plants can already be found in the ink painting of the Song dynasty as the “Drei Die des Winters (jap: Saikan no san 'yū Die Die 様).” In Japan, as in China, this 3-Series combination means happiness, so it is also used as a New Year’s ornament. This motif falls under the category “kisshō monyō Dieses 文様” (= pattern with auspicious sign): this includes the combination of crane and tortoise (tsuru kame Dieses 様), as well as phenix (hōō Mo), butterfly (chō) and auspicious clouds (zui 'un 様).
