Zadowice, pow. Kalisz. Badania Muzeum Archeologicznego i Etnograficznego w Łodzi w latach 1952–1998

View through CrossRef
The paper presents the history of the discovery of the cemetery at Zadowice, Kalisz district, and the subsequent stages of its investigation, from surface survey to excavation. It discusses the results of the research carried out by the staff of the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography in Łódź between 1952 and 1998. The first phase of the research focused on the cemetery, where graves of the Lusatian (21), Pomeranian (131) and Przeworsk (831) cultures were discovered, as well as a small early medieval row cemetery with seven graves. The most important studies published to date on the artefacts from this cemetery are presented. The paper also highlights the role of Eleonora Kaszewska MA, who made the greatest contribution to the archaeological excavation of this site and prepared the monograph on the cemetery, which has yet to be published. In the second stage, the research focused on Przeworsk culture settlement sites designated as 1a, 1b and 1c, surrounding the cemetery. A brief discussion of the results and an overview of publications to date are presented. The results provided the basis for distinguishing a Przeworsk culture settlement complex, consisting of a centrally located cemetery and surrounding settlements, which together formed the smallest unit of settlement organisation. The complex was in use for almost the entire period of the development of the Przeworsk culture. In order to complete both phases of research, it is essential to publish all the material recovered from the cemetery at Zadowice.
