Lear’s Tears

This chapter contends that Edward Lear’s poetic composition is driven by his states of tearfulness (which he calls ‘The Morbids’). It furthers critical and theoretical studies by Eric Griffiths (1989), Susan Langer (1955), and Mutlu Blasing (2007), expands on formal readings by Isobel Armstrong and Yopie Prins (2011), and develops studies of tears by Mark Taylor (1990), Jeffrey Kottler (1996), Tom Lutz (2001), and Thomas Dixon (2015). Tracing the overlaps between tearful moments in Lear’s life and tearful rhythms in his poetry and drafts, it offers an unexpected view of the poet’s oeuvre and the rhythms of feeling contained within it.
