13 Ricimer's Early Career and the Reigns of Avitus and Majorian

Abstract This chapter discusses the early career of Ricimer, and the reigns of Avitus and Majorian. Ricimer was a barbarian and of noble ancestry. Sources provide no hint of how or why Ricimer entered the imperial service and rose to high rank. Ricimer has been referred to as comes (presumably rei militaris) in AD 456-7 during the reign of emperor Avitus. By the time of the overthrow of Avitus, Ricimer was magister militum.
