„Trzeba cenę trzymać, bo inaczej nie starczy na buty!” Nie tylko o honorariach w korespondencji Jana Zachariasiewicza i Józefa Ignacego Kraszewskiego

The paper presents main motifs in the correspondence between Jan Chryzostom Zachariasiewicz and Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. The exchange of letters between the two popular writers started in 1856, and the last known letter was written in 1886. 39 letters by Zachariasiewicz have been preserved in the Jagiellonian Library, while only one letter to him by Kraszewski is known. The author of Na kresach (On The Eastern Borderlands) gives frequent and critical accounts of the cultural life in Galicia; he describes at length events connected with literary periodicals and their editors. He soon becomes a well-off writer and in his letters he often admonishes Kraszewski for lowering his author’s fees. He visited the author of Stara baśń (An Ancient Tale) in Dresden several times and later he could also afford several-month stays in Venice. However, he repeatedly stresses that he is emotionally attached to his home land on the River San. The correspondence reveals an anecdotal image of Zachariasiewicz trying for years to find his other half in vain. A complement to the discussed set of letters is the correspondence of Kraszewski with Karol Estreicher and Maria and Felicjan Faleński, which sheds some light on the relation between the two writers.
