Abstract
Franklin B. Gowen, the president of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad, has aptly been described as “one of the great architects of industrial capitalism in America.”1 The rise of the Reading under Gowen’s presidency provides the essential background for understanding the reemergence of the Molly Maguires in the 1870s. In his struggle to win control of the Schuylkill anthracite industry, Gowen faced two main sources of opposition, independent coal operators and organized labor. By defeating the small operators, the trade union, and the Molly Maguires, he eventually secured control of the coal industry of the lower anthracite region for the Reading Railroad.
