View through CrossRef
This essay examines the theme of heroism as embodied in the figure of Giuseppe Garibaldi in Italian children’s books from the 1880s to just before the First World War. These stories mourn rather than celebrate heroism. The melancholy representation of the Hero becomes a strategy of constituting national identity.
