The Geometric Bird and the Traveling Gaze: Paolo Uccello Seen by Chinese Tourists and Western Art History

This article examines the paintings of Paolo Uccello through a comparative perspective that contrasts Western art-historical interpretation with the ways in which contemporary Chinese tourists encounter and perceive his works in European museums. Rather than treating linear perspective as a universal achievement or normative standard of visual rationality, the study analyses how different cultural traditions of seeing shape the attribution of meaning to Uccello's geometry, stylization, and artificiality. Drawing on observations of museum practices, digital travel media, and visual commentary, the article shows that Chinese viewers often approach Uccello outside the teleological framework of Renaissance progress that dominates Western scholarship. Elements frequently regarded in Western discourse as deficiencies-rigidity, decorative excess, emotional distance-are instead perceived as deliberate construction and aesthetic choice. Perspective appears not primarily as a scientific breakthrough but as a visible system of ordering space. By juxtaposing these modes of reception, the article argues that Uccello's work functions as a productive site for cross-cultural reflection on vision, realism, and pictorial logic. The analysis contributes to broader debates on global museum audiences, the cultural contingency of art-historical categories, and the shifting meanings of canonical European art in a transnational context.
