Abstract
In a short essay written in 1938 Grainger described his knowledge of and feelings for Grieg’s music before he met the composer: In my childhood in Melbourne I heard a great deal of Grieg played by my mother and our dear friend R. Hamilton Russell-the first exquisite pianist in my life. Indeed my mother played more Grieg than any other music in the years 1888-1895.
