Abstract
Ulpian (Domitius Ulpianus) was one of the foremost Roman jurists during the Severan period (193–235
ce
). This article traces what little is known his career, and then discusses his numerous writings, particularly his huge commentaries on the basic texts of Roman private law. Ulpian is known primarily as a compiler of varying opinions from earlier jurists, which he sets out systematically; but his other writings are dominated by his interest in imperial administration. His broad perspective made him an attractive source for the compilers of Justinian's

.
