Domitius Ulpianus, commonly known as “Ulpian,” was a Tyrian jurist who wrote on a variety of Roman legal matters in the early 3rd century
ce
, as well as a prominent courtier and possible regent of the emperor Severus Alexander, before being killed at some point in the mid 220s. Ulpian was highly regarded in the centuries following his death but seems to have been especially important to the compilers of the
Digest
; fragments of Ulpian’s writing make up over 40 percent of the
Digest
and accordingly he appears in that compilation as by far the most important jurist of the High Classical period.
