Electrodynamics of Circuits

Currents in circuits course by the billions through our technology. Kirchhoff’s current laws are not found in the index of some widely used textbooks of electrodynamics, and so are not emphasized in courses using those texts. Electrodynamics and circuit theory could benefit if Kirchhoff’s current law and circuit theory are included in texts and taught to students of electrodynamics. Maxwell advocated another approach to current laws that includes displacement current
explicitly whenever current is computed. Computer packages like LT-Spice could follow Maxwell’s approach, thereby increasing the realism of their results, although not to perfection: details of layout and device properties are needed as well. This paper shows how circuit analysis grows from Maxwell’s electrodynamics using the classical Kirchhoff current law.
