Facsimiles Of Chant Books

Abstract In a general sense a great part of the theoretical writing of the Middle Ages is of relevance to the plainchant repertory. For example, much could be made of the place of ‘music’ in the history of ideas in the Middle Ages, in the medieval cosmology. But this is not the place for such a demonstration, and no attempt can be made here to summarize all the possible themes. Instead, the following sections will comment on a restricted number of topics which touch directly upon chant composition and practice.
