Toland, John

View through CrossRef
John Toland (1670–1722) was a radical writer usually situated in the tradition of English Deism. Toland used a combination of rationalism, free thought, materialism, and scholarship, to argue the case for a natural religion free from revelation, and fully accessible to man's natural reason. He then directed this interpretation of religion against the authority of the clergy, campaigning as a significant figure in the “war on priestcraft” to undermine the clergy's claim to special divine knowledge.
