Rom, 82. Ponte Nomentano
View through Europeana Collections
The leaf shows the Ponte Nomentano from a northern direction. This bridge takes Via Nomentana across the Aniene River and has been outside the walls of Rome for a long time. The rural character of the scene is emphasized by the picnic society in the foreground. Late antique bridge construction has been destroyed and rebuilt several times in the course of its existence. She underwent the greatest change under Pope Nicholas V in the 15th century. From this time come the defensive structures. The bridge is now in almost unchanged condition. Only the ruinous arches on the eastern side of the Aniene are no longer present, as are the small Osteria on the left.
