The Vikings

Abstract This is a timely moment to consider the Vikings in the context of Britain, Ireland, and all their surrounding islands. Viking impact has been more usually discussed and analysed from the perspective of individual kingdoms and national entities, such as Anglo-Saxon England, Francia, and recently Scotland (or Alba). However, the Vikings are an international phenomenon; this period of European history is indeed often called the ‘Viking Age’. From the point of view of the Vikings, Britain, Ireland, and the islands were regarded as one maritime complex, giving access to different territories available for exploitation. This complex is geographically very much a part the northern maritime world, and north and east Britain are near neighbours with Scandinavia.
