The Worker’s Experience of Remote and Hybrid Work
View through CrossRef
This chapter examines the “remote” aspect of remote
work; that is, the physical separation of a worker from their office, supervisor, and
co-workers. While there is limited research on productivity and remote work up to now, two
studies suggest that remote work can result in increased productivity, at least some of the
time. Most experts believe that self-management traits are most critical for successful remote
work. The chapter then assesses whether there are gender, racial/ethnic, and generational or age
differences in people’s preferences for remote work. It also addresses how remote workers avoid
feelings of isolation and considers the impact of working remotely on work–life balance and
career advancement. Finally, the chapter discusses how the experience of hybrid work differs
from that of all-remote work.
