During two periods, 1891–1893 and 1895–1901, Gauguin lived in Tahiti in French Polynesia. His wood sculptures from the Tahiti years mix impressions from the Oceanic culture with traits and motifs from Asian art and other sources. In his paintings, Gauguin sought to convey a spirit of primordial, primitive religion, and he felt that this was best achieved with a rough-hewn handcrafted style. When the sculptures from Tahiti were shown in Europe, the public was confounded. This relief is from Gauguin's own house, and it was originally painted.
